Careers of Reward
Over the course of a lifetime, our work and careers consume a major portion of our time. We want them to be rewarding, safe, financially beneficial, and enjoyable. There is much that we don’t control in the economy, the work environment, and the world at large, yet there are many things over which we do have control. At the end of the day, we want to know that we have done all we could to have a fulfilling work life. At times, though, we are held back by old patterns, or we aren’t able to adjust to the fast changes employers throw at us, and maybe we get bored, taken for granted, or passed over unfairly. Perhaps we lack knowledge, skills or insight about the reality of the work world. We start to feel clueless or resentful, or maybe we have kept our hopes and spirits high yet want to try a new career path but don’t know how.
Counseling with a psychotherapist is designed to unlock the places where one feels stuck. My years as an employment lawyer, mediator, and career coach have enhanced my ability to get to the heart of what holds people back in their chosen work. We look with curiosity at the family influences that shaped your communication styles. We find the emotional hot spots and the skill deficits that provide your most fertile places of growth. Sometimes we do research or testing together to find the best information and match for skills. If it is what you seek, we might formulate new goals, intentions and ways to achieve these. We recognize with compassion that we all do the best we can, and we continue to reach for the stars. The commute to the office, school, factory, or boardroom should be as joyful a journey as any.
